Panzers Berlin 1945
This reference work offers a comprehensive account of the history of SS-Panzer-Abteilung 11 “Hermann von Salza” and schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 103/503 from their formation in mid-1943 to the final battles in Berlin in May 1945.
Initially deployed as infantry in early 1944, SS-Panzer-Abteilung 11 acquired a dozen defective pre-production Panthers and Sturmgeschütz III, fighting from Narva to Courland towards the end of 1944. After being reformed, the new Sturmgeschütz III of SS-Panzer-Abteilung 11 were assigned to schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 503, which was finally equipped with Tiger II tanks, and operated in Pomerania until the retreat to Berlin. The distinctive iconography of this book is derived from numerous unpublished photographs, including dozens from the original photo albums of Philipp Wild, one of only two tankers in the unit to have been awarded the prestigious Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross. The second recipient was the commander of SS-Panzer-Abteilung 11, SS-Ostubaf. Paul Albert Kausch, a distinguished Panzer officer who led his unit from its inception until the end in Berlin in 1945. Unpublished accounts from tank crews in both battalions provide detailed insight into their experiences.
The exceptional documentation compiled makes this book a definitive reference on two relatively unknown and poorly documented units.
This is a different book from the highly acclaimed Panzerwrecks book, Panzers in Berlin 1945.
