Hold The Oak Line by Frederick Jeanne
In contrast to other operations: Epsom, Windsor, Charnwood and Goodwood, the battles following the Normandy landings were complex. The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division suffered severe losses on the beaches before digging in next to the Caen-Bayeux railway line, the “Oak Line”. Later, the 12.SS-Panzer-Division and Panzer-Lehr-Division, widely delayed by Allied air forces, threw themselves into the battle, not knowing who they faced. The 7th Canadian Infantry Brigade held the western flank of the Canadian front, with the 50th British Infantry Division. The Germans wanted to force the Allies back to the sea, but the Canadians have to hold the Oak Line.
